History of La Villa Cap Ferrat
Hotel Belle Aurore (now La Villa Cap Ferrat) was recently mentioned in the book ‘Charlotte’ of David FOENKINOS. This famous French author and screenwriter received ‘the prestigious ‘Prix Théophraste Renaudot’ for the novel.
Charlotte SALOMON (1917-1943) was a German-Jewish artist born in Berlin. She was deported and killed in Auschwitz at the age of 26 – having just given 700 of her paintings to a friend.
Since 1973 part of the Amsterdam Jewish museum has been dedicated to her and her work. In Berlin, a street has been named after her. Bibo Bergeron is presently making a movie about Charlotte Salomon’s life and work.
Charlotte was hosted free for two years by the manager of the hotel Belle Aurore. During this time she devoted herself exclusively to her work and rarely went out of the hotel.
